ABOUT SHOCK FOSSILS
Powerful Electrons Burn Through Acrylic Slabs to Create Art
Shock Fossils are the creation of Todd Johnson, an artist and Electrical
Engineer at Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois.
Johnson mixes art and science to craft incredible 3D acrylic sculptures generated by a particle accelerator. Particle accelerators use electromagnetic fields to propel electrically-charged particles at high speeds. Johnson’s technique involves using 5 million volts to accelerate a beam of electrons into acrylic blocks and cylinders. Since acrylic is an excellent electrical insulator, electrons become temporarily trapped within Johnson’s sculptures. Shock Fossils are works of art that capture the raw power of electricity. When the electrons are released, powerful electrical sparks melt and fracture the acrylic internally, leaving a permanent record (like a kind of fossil record) of their branching paths. These branching electric discharges are known as Lichtenberg Figures, but Johnson calls his artistic creations – Shock Fossils.
